Results of a comprehensive ‘regional
well-being survey’ of Murray-Darling
Basin communities will be dissected at a
public event in Renmark tomorrow.
The 2013 Regional Well-being Survey
examined the lives of people living in rural and
regional areas across Australia, including specifi-
cally the Riverland.
Key questions to be addressed
in the presentation will include:
What is the state of health and well-being in
communities in your region?
How do things like changes in agriculture,
global warming, and water reform link to the
well-being of your community?
What things best support building sustain-
able rural communities?
What is the role of groundwater in deter-
mining how ecosystems respond to drought and
How do our communities see their futures?
The survey was conducted by MDBfutures, at
the University of Canberra. More than 9000 resi-
dents shared their views about their own health
and well-being, and their community’s well-
being, along with what helps them adapt to the
many changes occurring in Australia’s regional
and rural communities.
Results of the survey will be presented at the
seminar, with summary reports available on the
Public sessions are being held across several
Murray-Darling Basin communities this week.
Tomorrow’s local session will be held at the
Renmark Paringa Community and Civic Centre
The session will consist of a one-hour pres-
entation, followed by discussion. All locals are
invited to attend the free event.

A new local program will aim to upskill
locals and improve their job prospects over
the next year.
RDGP will run the seven-week Reach for the
Stars program as part of the South Australian
Government’s Skills for All initiative.
Locals aged 17 and over who are unem-
ployed and out of study will be able to learn new
skills and network with new people, while also
improving literacy and numeracy skills.
RDGP project officer Rebecca Flack said the
free course would be laid-back but informative.
“Along the way participants will have the
opportunity to learn many new skills such as
photography, computing, nutrition, budgeting,
volunteer opportunities and much more,” she
said. “At the end of the course participants will
be linked into the Regional Development Aus-
tralia Career Development Centre in Berri for
further career planning support.”
Four courses will run over the next 12
months, with the first beginning on August 6.
