ROUND ONE RESULTS
DEFENDING Dinghy Derby
champion Matt Thur capped off
a big year by winning the 2016
5RM, Berri Hotel, Riverland
Mazda, Riverland Sportsperson
of the Year award on Friday
In front of a large crowd at
the Berri Hotel, Thur beat 28
other nominees from a variety of
sports to win the award.
Thur said it was a special
moment to hear his name read
out as the winner.
“It is right up there. I was
absolutely ecstatic,” he said.
“I didn’t expect it, there were
other nominees who were all
deserving in their own right, so
it was very special.”
The 28-year-old said having
his friends and family there to
share the awards night with him
made it even more enjoyable.
“It was really cool, I think
we had 16 or 17 people there
including friends and family
and my two ‘deckies’ that I have
raced with over the years,” he
“It was great to get both of
“It is that atmosphere with
your friends and family that
makes dinghy racing so much
Thur said it was a humbling
experience to even be in conten-
tion for the prestigious award.
“I was honoured to be nomi-
nated in the first place,” he said.
“It is something pretty cool
and I will always cherish it .
“It was good just to be a part
of it and the win was just an
The now two-time Red Bull
Dinghy Derby winner believes
the simplicity of the sport is a ke
in its increasing popularity.
“I think it is the fact it is
cheap fun and you can do it with
your mate,” he said.
“Everyone is doing it with
their best mate most of the time.
“You buy a racing boat and
you race it on Saturday, take it
fishing on Sunday and water
skiing on Monday.
“They are a versatile boat and
it is the cheapest form of motor-
sport you can ever get into.”
Thur credits two men in par-
ticular with having helped him
get to this point, calling them
“One would be Jason Gordon,
a nominee for the Riverland
Sportsperson of the Year, and
dinghy derby winner,” he said.
“The other one would be Jay
Branson who is a really good
friend of mine.
“We have spent hours and
hours on the phone to each other
in the lead-up to different events
talking tactics, motors and what
everyone else is doing.”
Thur also acknowledged the
work of the most important
member of his crew.
“Ultimately I would like to
thank Shane Palat, my current
deckie,” he said.
“I couldn’t have done it with-
“It should be a sports team
of the year award because you
can’t dinghy race on your own.”
According to Thur, he and his
team are already eyeing their
third Dinghy Derby win.
“We have sort of got our feet
up at the moment but there is
a very serious plan going into
2018,” he said.
“Hopefully it all comes
In addition to the main award,
