RENMARK North claimed the
2016/17 Riverland Turf Cricket
Association A grade premiership with
a seven-wicket win over Loxton on
In just its first year in the competi-
tion, Renmark North proved early in
the season that it was a force to be
reckoned with and that showed in its
clinical grand final win.
Reigning champions Loxton won
the toss and elected to bat first
It got off to a positive start with
openers Brad Walter and Will Gutsche
putting on 30 runs for the first wicket.
Walter was knocked over for 19,
bringing Joshua Deren to the crease
who made six.
When young opener Gutsche was
dismissed for 27, with the team score
at 3/58, the match was poised evenly.
Disaster soon struck for Loxton as
it lost its final eight wickets for just
36 runs, to be bowled out for 94 in the
Renmark North’s Ben Townsend
was the chief architect of the collapse,
taking 3/9 from five overs.
Roley Boon and Ashley Lindner
were also good for Renmark North
with the ball, both taking 2/16 from

Loxton, Renmark North held its nerve
to reach the required total for victory
with 14 balls to spare and seven wick-
ets in hand.
Renmark North captain Liam
Jackson said it was a special feeling to
claim the title.
“It’s unreal. We expected to play in
the grand final, but I don’t think any-
thing could have got us ready for what
happened – it’s a surreal feeling,” he
“We thought we put together a pret-
ty good playing roster, but we knew
Loxton were a great team.
“So, we knew it wasn’t going to be
easy, but we backed ourselves in all
Jackson said there was a number of
“Everyone did their job. Ash
Lindner bowled really well, him and
Roley did really well at the start,” he
“Ben Townsend was unreal. He’s a
man for all occasions.
“I think he will be playing a bit of
rep cricket next year – he’s been our
best cricketer all year.”
Jackson said he was proud of the
way his players executed their plans
“Our plan was to be loud and put
them under as much pressure as we
could and it worked out pretty well,”
Jackson said the premiership meant
a lot to a number of players, but they
won’t just be stopping with one.
“There was a reasonably large
crowd, and I think it meant a bit to
a few of the older blokes that have
played in the district comp for North
for a while,” he said.
“I think it meant as much to the
older blokes as us.
“Our plan is to be here next year
and try to win it again.”
