SPOTLIGHT ON YOUNG PEOPLE
with Melanie Gilgen
Let’s face it, life is stressful. Friends, family, school,
work, sports, hobbies, fitness... the list of priorities
goes on and on and keeping up with it all can be
While you’re likely to think about your physical health
on a daily basis (mirrors act as a constant reminder!) how
often do you stop and think about your mental health?
Whether you’ve experienced a mental illness or not,
looking after your mental health should be right up there
on your priority list with eating, breathing and making it
to that party on the weekend.
October is Mental Health Month and it aims to get
you thinking about your own mental wellbeing. Been a
bit too stressed lately? Feeling a bit lost or down? Getting
a bit irritated with friends or family? Perhaps it’s time to
look into your mental health mirror and see what’s there.
So this October, take some time to get a feel for
where you’re at and if something ’s bugging you or
doesn’t feel quite right, take some action. Spend a day
doing something you love, go for a walk and enjoy the
sunshine, or write down those worries and get them out
of your head.
Talking to someone who can help you make sense
of it all and work out some next steps can also be really
useful. They may not have all the answers but they can
certainly share the burden and help you find them.
Remember, mental health is not just about
the absence of mental illness. It’s an overall sense of
wellbeing, being able to cope with life’s stresses and
pressures and reaching your full potential.
